The Coull Quartet
In memory of Philip Gallaway, a founder member of the Quartet
The Coull has been a favourite of our audiences for longer than any other and we are delighted to welcome them back, this time sadly without Philip Gallaway, their second violin who died last autumn.
Beginning with Beethoven’s No. 1 quartet, which in several respects echoes Haydn’s style, they continue with the first of Haydn’s quartets to be composed for the public concert hall rather than private performance. The melancholic mood of Dvorak’s D minor quartet reflects a difficult and sad time in the composer’s personal life.
Beethoven – Op. 18, No. 1 in F
Haydn – Op. 74, No. 1 in C
Dvorák – Op. 34 in D minor
